Hello! My name is Scott, and I currently work as a Research Analyst at the University of Vermont in beautiful Burlington, VT. When I'm not out biking and hiking around the Green Mountain State or tending to my garden, I mostly find myself in front of the computer. I'm a complete nerd when it comes to hydrology, mapmaking, statistics, computation, and scripting. This website hosts some of my projects in those areas that don't fit neatly on LinkedIn or a GitHub readme.
How did I get here?
Welcome
Background
A friend of mine once told me to "follow what makes you curious," and I find myself returning to those words whenever I think of my academic and professional path. As a high schooler who loved building stage scenery, I decided to go to college for engineering. As a freshman concerned with sustainability and community, I pursued Civil Engineeering for its focus on improving the quality of life of those around me. I loved all my water-themed coursework, and after some postgrad traveling, I landed my first job working as a consultant to FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program. That job was AWESOME and exposed me to hundreds of hydrologic and hydraulic models, mapping tools, and furthered my scripting abilities. After a while, my curiosity for hydrologic nonstationarity and novel modeling tools got the better of me, and I enrolled at the University of Vermont to work on generating probabilisitc floodplain maps for 30,000+ miles of streams in Vermont. In my thesis project, I've developed a novel statistical hydrology method, and my current research is on improving the channel routing module of the National Water Model.
